Google's AI Mode Now Available in India | How It Works

Date : 26 July 2025

Traditional Google searches, until a while back, required typing your keywords into the search bar, followed by scrolling through numerous links until you found the information you desired. Google’s AI mode has now changed how we search online. Google claims its AI mode brings about a smarter and more intuitive experience for users today.

What is Google’s AI mode?

Concise and comprehensive answers are what it is. Although websites and links are not being done away with, it is a step higher than just listing websites. It is the sort of instant gratification that perhaps one needs in today’s undoubtedly fast-paced world. Google’s AI Mode uses a custom version of Gemini 2.5, Google’s latest large language model. This AI allows the following:

  • Understanding Complex Queries: It can handle long, layered questions. This includes questions that would typically require multiple searches.
  • Providing AI-generated Responses: It's the AI-powered summaries and answers at the top of search results that we are used to by now. These are often in a structured format with links to the sources, which proves rather helpful.
  • Supports Follow-up Question: It allows for follow-up questions and remembers the context of previous queries.
  • Embracing Multimodal Inputs: Just like how we do it in traditional Google search, we can ask questions using voice or by uploading an image using Google Lens over here as well.

A New Way to Explore

AI Mode simplifies and smoothens the process of researching or comparing products. Imagine asking, “My kids are 4 and 7 and have lots of energy. Suggest creative ways to get them active and moving indoors, especially on hot days, without needing a lot of space or expensive toys.” This mode will give you a structured, multi-faceted response, possibly pulling in ideas from parenting blogs, activity guides, and expert recommendations. Even follow-up questions, such as, “Which of these activities can they do independently?” can then be asked. This is possible due to google’s ‘query fan-out’. We realize that this process traditionally would have been very time consuming, but AI Mode breaks down these complex questions into subtopics and searches for each simultaneously across multiple data sources. It then synthesizes the results into a unified, contextual response.

How to Use the AI Mode in search

How to use Google AI mode in search is straightforward.

  • Open Google Search or the Google App: A new “AI Mode” tab will appear alongside “All,” “News,” and “Images.”
  • Click on the AI Mode tab: This will take you to the AI Mode interface.
  • Enter your query: Type your question into the search bar, use the microphone icon for voice input, or tap the Google Lens icon to upload an image and ask your question.

No special setup or sign-in is required to use this feature.

AI Mode Now in India

Google has a platform called Google Labs where they introduce and test early-stage experimental products and features, including those powered by AI. Interested users generally sign up for Google Labs to test out those features and provide feedback. And now, having successfully tested the AI mode in the US with positive user feedback, Google rolled out AI Mode to all users in India without needing a Labs sign-up. We can now experience this advanced AI search, initially in English. India is one of the first countries outside the US to get this widespread access. This highlights the country's growing importance in the digital landscape, along with the affinity for new technologies like voice and visual search. After all, India leads the world in Google Lens usage, making it a natural fit for AI Mode's multimodal capabilities.

The Impact and the Future

Google's AI Mode is a visible shift in how people interact with information online. It makes you think about what might be in store for the foreseeable future. But like any early-stage AI product, there may be instances where it does not perform as expected. And as one of the first countries with this user experience, one can tell that Google is actively working on refining and improving its AI Mode. Feedback is being taken through the thumbs up/down icons at the bottom of AI Mode responses to make the user experience more streamlined, if it wasn’t already so. The launch of AI Mode in India shows Google's commitment to making search more intelligent and intuitive for everyone. It provides us with faster, smarter, and more reliable answers, along with the convenience of having the sources of those answers in our palms (minus the link surfing). Safe to say that it opens new ways for exploring and understanding the world, therefore.
